Your Well-Woman Visit: A Check-Up Just for You!
Your well-woman visit is a yearly check-up to keep you feeling your best! This is the time to check in on your health, catch any issues early, and talk about what’s important to you—whether it’s birth control, family planning, or just feeling good.
What’s Included?
At your visit, your doctor will go over screenings, tests, and lifestyle tips based on your age, health history, and risk factors.
STI Testing (Chlamydia & Gonorrhea)
- Under 25? Get tested every year if you’re sexually active.
- 25 or older? Get tested if you have risk factors (new/multiple partners, past STIs, or a partner with an STI).
HIV Screening
- At least once between ages 13-64 (per CDC & ACOG).
- Annually if you have risk factors.
Cervical Cancer Screening (Pap Smear & HPV Test)
- Start at age 21 and continue until 65.
Breast Cancer Screening (Mammograms)
- Start between ages 40-50, depending on risk and preference.
- Every 1-2 years after that.
Colon Cancer Screening
- Starts at age 45 with a colonoscopy every 10 years.
Lipid (Cholesterol) Screening
- Once between ages 9-11 & 18-21.
- Every 5 years starting at 40, or more often if at risk for heart disease.
Diabetes Screening
- Starting at age 45, every 2 years.
- Earlier if overweight (BMI >25) or other risk factors (family history, high blood pressure, PCOS, etc.).
Bone Health (Osteoporosis Screening)
- All women 65+ should get a bone density test.
- Younger postmenopausal women may need testing if at risk (low body weight, smoking, family history, etc.).
Thyroid Check
- No routine screening unless you have risk factors (family history, symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, dry skin).
- Routine testing recommended at 65+.
Heart Health & Cholesterol
- Ages 40-75: Check cholesterol & heart disease risk every 5 years.
- If LDL (“bad cholesterol”) is high, you may need a statin medication to lower your risk.
Extra Tips for a Healthy You!
Take folic acid (0.4mg (400mcg) daily or higher dose depending on risk factors) if you’re able to become pregnant—it helps prevent birth defects!
- Stay active, eat well, and don’t smoke—small habits make a big difference!
- Talk to your doctor about your concerns—whether it’s birth control, mental health, or family planning, this visit is about YOU!
